Aster divaricatus

Now known as Eurybia divaricarta. White Wood Aster.

Native to the Eastern U.S. and typically grows in the wild in dry open woods. Grows in loose clumps with stems up to 70cm tall. Distinctive leaves are heart-shaped, stalked and coarsely toothed. Small but abundant flowers (2 to 3cm across) have white rays and yellow to red center disks and appear in flat-topped, terminal clusters in late summer to early fall. Attractive to butterflies.

A favourite shade loving plant of Gertrude Jekyll.

Aster ageratoides 'Harry Schmidt'

A compact form of aster with a regular shape, the stems erect and tight. Its abundant pale pink flowers occurs at the end of summer. Its foliage is robust and reistant to mildew. Sun to part shade. Prefers moist well-drained soil. Fully hardy.

Aster ‘Little Carlow’ - AGM

(cordifolius hybrid)

This lilac-blue cross between the New York and Blue wood Asters was introduced by Margaret ("Daisy") Emily Thornely who lived  from 1875 until 1950 in Wiltshire, England. Sun to part shade. Prefers moist well-drained soil. Fully hardy.

Aster nova-anglaie 'Violetta

Now called Symphyotrichum nova-anglaie 'Violetta'. From late summer through to autumn bears a prolific display of fine rayed violet purple daisies giving a regal purple splash of colour to the autumn border. Sun to part shade. Prefers moist well-drained soil. Fully hardy.

Aster x frikartii 'Monch' - AGM

‘Monch’ is a hybrid aster (often commonly called Frikart’s aster) that features 5cm across daisy-like flowers with lavender-blue rays and yellow centres. A profusion of flowers are borne on a compact, multi-stemmed loose bushy plant with an open habit. Flowers freely from early summer to fall. This is one of the four original hybrids (A. amellus x A. thomsonii) from the German hybridizer Frikart. The other three are ‘Jungfrau’, ‘Wonder of Staffa’ and ‘Eiger’.
